Uttara Kanda 11 - The End of Lavanasura
Shatrughna told Lavana that he would kill him and send him to Yama’s abode. The rakshasa flung a tree, but Shatrughna shattered it into a hundred pieces. Shatrughna then shot arrows at Lavana. Even though the arrows hit Lavana’s chest, it didn’t affect him. Lavana then pulled out a tree and struck Shatrughna on his head, making him fall.
Shatrughna got up angrily and, picking up the powerful arrow given by Rama, shot it at Lavana. Seeing the divine arrow in Shatrughna’s hand, all the Gods assembled to witness the battle. Shatrughna released the arrow, and it struck the demon, went to Rasatala, and returned. Lavana collapsed on the ground and gave up his life. With his death, his trident returned to Rudra.
The Gods who were pleased with Shatrughna offered him a boon. Shatrughna then asked that the city of Madhupura be populated. The Gods blessed him, and soon, Shatrughna’s soldiers began to build residences. In twelve years, a great city was built and the Shurasenas began to live there.
After twelve years, Shatrughna returned to Ayodhya to see Rama. He pleaded with Rama not to send him back, saying he wanted to stay with Rama. Embracing him warmly, Rama reminded him of his dharma as a Kshatriya, which was to rule and protect people. Rama asked Shatrughna to return to his kingdom and come back to see Rama whenever he wanted. Shatrughna stayed for five days and then returned to his kingdom.
